Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dermatologist?

Dermatologists are specialist doctors who diagnose and treat conditions of the skin, hair, nails, and related areas, including the mouth, genitals, and skin cancers.

In Australia, dermatologists complete an accredited four-year full-time specialist training program through the Australasian College of Dermatologists. During this time, they undergo extensive clinical training and are required to pass rigorous examinations to ensure they meet the highest standards of expertise and patient care in the management of skin diseases.

They care for patients of all ages and manage numerous skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, vitiligo, alopecia, infections, and skin cancer, using medical, surgical, and cosmetic treatments.

Do I need a referral to see Dr Shao?

You don’t need a referral to see Dr Shao, but having one from your GP or another specialist is recommended. A valid referral allows you to claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation and helps ensure your care is coordinated with your other treating doctors.

What happens during a skin check?

During a skin check with Dr Shao, you will be taken to a private clinic room. You will be asked a few questions to help assess your skin cancer risk and to identify any specific concerns, such as new or changing spots.

You will then be asked to undress to your underwear behind a closed curtain. Dr Shao will examine your skin using specialised lighting and magnification to assess all visible lesions. If you are wearing makeup, this may need to be removed.

You will be asked whether you have any concerns about areas beneath your underwear; these areas are not routinely examined unless specifically requested.

If any skin lesions appear concerning, clinical photography may be performed and a biopsy will be taken for further assessment.

Are telehealth appointments available?

It depends on your referral and skin condition you have, as some skin conditions will not be able to be adequately assessed through online video. Please contact one of the clinics Dr Shao works at with a referral to find out more.

What is Dr Shao’s consultation fee?
